Prerequisites    

have successfully completed the B1 level of German according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and wish to improve their German language skills through German literature.

Approach

This course aims to enhance students' German language skills by exploring significant literary works across various genres. Through the reading of selected texts, the students refine not only their reading abilities, but also expand their vocabulary, and improve their expressive skills. The course emphasizes interpretation and discussion, helping students gain a deeper understanding of the linguistic nuances and stylistic features of the German language. During the course, he students develop a deeper understanding of different literary genres and styles, improve their linguistic abilities in both oral and written forms, and the ability to analyze and interpret literary texts and gain an awareness of the cultural and historical contexts of the selected literary works.

Methods and forms of work

  • Reading andanalysis of literary texts, including novels, short stories, poems, and dramas.
  • Discussions to explore different perspectives and deepen understanding
  • Interpretative work on three levels: genre theory and genre history, literary historical context, comparative analysis of different texts.
  • Wrting exercises based on the texts studied (summaries, essays and reflections)

Performance monitoring   

  • Active Participation in Discussions
  • A written assignment on a literary work or a specific topic must be submitted.

Teaching materials: A list of literary works will be compiled in collaboration with the learners. 

Primary Literature: Selected literary works in German (novels, poems, short stories).
Secondary Literature: Scholarly literature to support analysis and interpretation.

Beginn/Term duration: On request. 

Mode of delivery: Online, face-to-face (only company course); blended. 

Placement test: A placement test consists of a personal interview (max. 15 min) and grammar exercises.

Special attention is given to contemporary approaches, including discourse analysis, literature and science studies, post- and decolonialism, intermediality research, as well as gender and queer studies. These perspectives enrich the exploration of texts and contribute to a well-rounded academic experience.
