Prerequisites
The course is designed for seafarers who want to improve their English language skills.
Approach
This course aims to meet the STCW Convention and ISM Code requirements for the English language proficiency needed by all seafarers and prepare them for the Marlins certificate exam. It offers a strong foundation in Maritime English, focusing on relevant maritime and ocean topics to equip the participants with essential communication skills. The curriculum covers all four core language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—while emphasizing grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary, including technical and maritime terminology. The participants improve their fluency and pronunciation, learn how to deliver briefings and instructions, read a range of marine documents, expand their knowledge of standard marine communication phrases, and practice writing forms and maritime documentation. The course is enriched with interactive exercises, practical examples, and simulated scenarios, offering a dynamic and engaging learning experience; the participants have opportunities to apply Maritime English in real-world contexts, are continuously evaluated and receive a final grade.
By the end of the course, participants are able to communicate effectively in both written and spoken forms within maritime environments. Additionally, they have the option to prepare for and take the International Maritime English Testing System (IMETS) to assess their English language proficiency.
